Dichroic Glass Samples
Dichroic Glass Samples
These are a few dozen of the dichroic glass colors available for custom commissions. Some are on glass with a black coating on one side and color on the reverse. Others are transparent with varying textures. All of these change color to varying degrees depending on the light source. The transparent colors have more apparent color shifts.
Dichroic comes from the Greek words "di" (two) and "chroma" (color). The mesmerizing, color-shifting effect is created by applying multiple ultra-thin layers of metal oxides and other materials, such as titanium, chromium, or magnesium, in a vacuum chamber. These nanoscale layers interact with different wavelengths of light, reflecting some colors while transmitting others, making the glass appear to change hue with viewing angle.
